TSA Guidelines

TSA guidelines are frequently updated to maintain the highest levels of security in airports around the nation. Staying up to date and complying with TSA guidelines is the best way to ensure a smooth experience every time you fly. Please visit the TSA Website before your flight to view updated travel guidelines, restrictions, and other important information straight from the Transportation Security Administration.

An Efficient and Secure Experience

One of the main reasons people love flying with Shenandoah Valley Airport is because they don’t have to arrive hours in advance to wait in long lines at check-in and security. Passengers only need to arrive at SHD one hour before their scheduled boarding time, instead of the typical two hours for domestic destinations and three hours for international trips. One hour will ensure enough time to check-in and go through our efficient TSA security process. We encourage all of our passengers to follow TSA guidelines and prepare luggage correctly to ensure a fast and thorough security experience for everyone.

Going through security at SHD offers a minimally stressful experience that will leave you feeling safe and confident. We maintain the highest standards of airport safety and reduce wait times by staffing our terminal security checkpoints with the right number of TSA personnel. Unlike larger and more congested metro airports, the smaller and more personal setting at our terminal ensures that our TSA professionals conduct thorough security checks while keeping lines moving.

We also have TSA PreCheck available at SHD for frequent travelers enrolled in the program. This provides an even smoother TSA experience.

What can I bring on the plane?

For the complete list of what is acceptable to bring in carry-on luggage and checked baggage, please visit TSA’s “What can I bring?” page. And for faster, more personalized help, the TSA runs an “Ask TSA” Facebook and Twitter account to answer your burning questions.

The Liquids Rule

For carry-on luggage, passengers may bring a quart-sized bag of liquids, aerosols, gels, creams, and pastes, all of which should be in containers 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) or less per item. Be sure to store these items in a clear plastic bag with a resealable zip-top, and don’t forget to separate that bag from your other carry-on items. This ensures a smooth TSA screening process for all passengers.

Containers that are larger than 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) must go in checked luggage, regardless of how much liquid remains in those containers.
